2. Roughly half of Toronto’s population was born outside of Canada.

3. According to the statistics, Toronto, Canada, enjoys 301 measurable days of sunshine per year, December having the fewest (19) and July/August having the most (30). So be sure to bring your sunglasses!

4. The residents and natives of Toronto are properly known as Torontonians. Even though it rolls off the tongue like an ice skate.

5. Speaking of ice skates, the lowest temperature ever recorded in Toronto was -31.3 degrees C (without wind chill) in 1943. And don’t forget to pack a sweater!

6. A small portion of Torontonians, close to six percent, refer to their city as “The 6ix”. This is not because of the local telephone area codes, 416 and 647, but is due to the fact that Toronto is actually made up of six separate cities, which the government of Ontario consolidated into one single municipality in 1998. (Those six cities included East York, Etobicoke, North York, Scarborough, York and the city of Toronto.) 

7. Babe Ruth hit his first home run as a professional ballplayer at Maple Leaf Park (formerly Hanlan’s Point Stadium) in Toronto, on September 5, 1914.

8. Toronto has more than 1,500 parks which make up nearly 20 percent of the city’s total area.

9. Toronto’s name comes from the Mohawk word “tkaronto”, meaning “where trees grow in water”.
