Introduction

Let’s all agree to the fact that as romantic as the idea of moving to a new country is, the process of arranging the intricacies can quickly get tiresome. It’s a major transitional time for anyone; you will have to navigate through challenges relating to housing, finances, healthcare and transport amongst other things. Additionally, it will be necessary to keep a check on your mental well-being to cope with these changes. Simple things like getting a driver’s license in Montreal can get very overwhelming; if moving from another country to Quebec, or even from another province of Canada. Hopefully, this simple guide can answer your questions, and get you onto the path of driving in Quebec!

If you are a full-time international student holding a valid foreign driver’s license in Quebec:

It is possible to drive in Quebec with your driver’s license for the entirety of your program (no driving test required!).  This is only applicable if your license is valid for the duration, and is in French/English. If not, you will have to get an IDP (international driving permit). For details, visit here.

If you are a new resident holding a valid foreign license or driver’s license from another province:

Firstly, you are able to drive for up to 6 months with your valid foreign license and/or IDP in Quebec, so that’s a relief! Depending on your country of origin, you can also do a driver’s license exchange without giving a driving test. Please check the official website to check your eligibility.

There are options to get a driver’s license in Quebec without going through the whole process; even if your country of origin is not included in the driver’s license exchange program. Check the details and fill in this form

If you are a new resident that wishes to apply for a new driver’s license in Quebec:

There are 5 major steps involved in getting your driver’s license in Quebec-

  • Register for a driving course recognized by AQTr. There are four phases to this course comprising 12 modules. You must complete the first 5 modules to get to the next step.
  • The next step is obtaining your learner’s license. You will need to make an appointment online in the SAAQ website (under service outlets). It will be valid for 18 months.
  • You will then need to accumulate at least 10 months of practical training and complete the other modules of your driving course before proceeding towards the next step.
  • The Knowledge test is the fourth step that will cover signs, signals and other safety codes which is necessary to make sure you are prepared for the driving test (and the roads of Quebec!).
  • The final step is the road test which lasts approximately 1 hr. If you successfully pass, then you will be awarded the probationary license. Given that you maintain a good driving record, you will be awarded your class 5 driver’s license for Quebec after 2 years.

Having a driver’s license can surely open a lot of doors and make travel easier. Have a great time exploring beautiful Quebec and the Great White North!
