Without wanting to overlap with our existing blog on skiing resorts near Montréal; we wanted to outline some of the other popular winter activities in Canada, as skiing is just one of many things to do during the long snowy season. In fact, there are plenty of ways to amuse yourself between winter snowstorms:

  • Dog sledding: One of the best Canadian activities, and one that’s sure to get the senses tingling! The nearest one to Montréal is about one and a half hours from the city, and you can find them similar distances from both Québec City and Toronto. You can take a day trip or go for a whole week to discover beautiful Canadian landscapes in a dog sled.
  • Igloofest (Montréal): An electro music festival all in ice for 4 weekends in January and February. Come and enjoy the ice bar and the music of local and international DJs at the old port of Montréal. Visit the website of the event for more information!
  • Sugar Shacks: let’s succumb to the temptation and test the most rustic thing in Québec. During the winter, sugar shacks are a haven of warmth (more the atmosphere than the temperature!) and delicious products made of maple syrup. If you are interested, read more about sugar shacks.
  • Slide on the Rideau Canal: Each year, the city of Ottawa has a special winter activity open to everyone: a large public skating rink. However, this is not any old skating rink – it’s the canal. It is therefore the biggest skating rink in the world, at 7.8km of ice. Maybe you will see some hockey teams training on the ice!
  • See a hockey game: with the hockey season lasting from the autumn through to the spring, the cold winter months are a perfect opportunity to take in a game! There are top-level NHL teams in Montréal, Ottawa, Toronto, Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver, as well as hundreds of lower league teams all across the country. Whatever the level, we recommend you take in a game and enjoy the Canadian atmosphere!
